Flore Laurentienne is the vessel of Québec, Canada-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Mathieu David Gagnon. Born near the St. Lawrence River, the classically trained musician channels the nature, grandeur and light of his formative environment into spectral hues through ensemble interpretations that incorporate elements of post minimalism, early progressive rock, and the compositional art of fugue. Gagnon studied music composition at the Université de Montréal and classical and orchestral music at the Conservatoire d’Aubervilliers in Paris and the Conservatoire de Bordeaux.
Volume I was originally released by Montreal-based record label Costume Records in 2019 and was longlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. It received four Felix Award nominations for Revelation of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Critic’s Choice Album of the Year and Instrumental Album of the Year at the 42nd Felix Awards in 2020, and a Juno Award nomination for Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2021.
