Aviary heißt das aktuelle Album von Julia Holter und ist eine epische Reise durch das, was Holter als „die Kakophonie des Geistes in einer schmelzenden Welt“ beschreibt. Das bisher atemberaubendste Album der Komponistin aus Los Angeles ist voll von überraschenden Wendungen und schillernden Instrumentalarrangements. Der Nachfolger ihres von der Kritik gefeierten Albums „Have You in My Wilderness“ aus dem Jahr 2015 geht von einer Kurzgeschichte der Schriftstellerin Etel Adnan aus: „Ich befand mich in einer Voliere voller kreischender Vögel“. Es ist ein Szenario, das wie aus einem Horrorfilm klingt, aber es ist auch eine ziemlich gute Metapher für das Leben im Jahr 2018, mit seinem endlosen Ansturm von politischen Skandalen, irreversiblen Naturkatastrophen und Stimmen, die ihre Wünsche und Ressentiments in die Leere schreien.

Special Guest Special-K

Special-K is an Icelandic avant-garde musician and artist. Her debut album I Thought I’d Be More Famous by Now is a visual album where every song has its own music video. She combines different elements like pop culture, fashion, poetry and whimsical music to create a universe of her own. A Universe made out of post-internet aesthetics, cheekily honest lyrics and all kinds of quirky sounds and instruments. The music (which is all written, recorded and produced by her) is a mixture of rawness and sophistication, combining complex chord arrangements with playful recorder flute solos etc. The videos were made in collaboration with many different artists and show an alien- and innocent looking girl in diverse circumstances. When playing live she projects the videos on a wall behind her with karaoke lyrics. The album is a tribute to the bittersweet melancholy of the everyday life of a millenial. Themes like unfulfilled dreams of fame and glory, love and boredom in the age of tinder and impostor syndrome are to be found in her songs – which are at the same time 100% sincere and 100% ironic.
